Damascus - Food & Drink
Enjoy international cuisines or mezzes to dine like a king.
Traditional Houses: Old City
The Old City's restored Damascene dwellings, with huge wooden doors and high ceilings, house upmarket restaurants serving local dishes. Start with mezzes of fatayer, parcels of spinach, and hummus and launch into tender lamb.
Busy: Downtown
Enjoy the lively centre of modern Damascus for its swathe of brightly lit traditional eateries and snack bars for a quick tasty falafel. Some are open 24 hours for a hearty late-night feed, especially on the streets around Martyr's Square.
Upmarket: Abu Rumaneh
Upmarket eateries flood swanky Abu Rumaneh, with international cuisines of all varieties. Find French, Mexican and a good chunky steak among the chi-chi boutiques.
Dine at the Top: Mount Kassioun
Dine near the top of Mount Kassioun; tuck into tabbouleh and tasty chicken and puff on an aromatic water-pipe ( argileh) as you gaze at the city below.
Dining Tips
Everyone dresses up. Locals eat around 10pm, and linger for long after. Service charges are not usually included in the bill, so add around 10%. Give a small tip to the man preparing the charcoal for the water-pipe.
